What to do next?

NEXT STEPS FOR A NEW CHRISTIAN

You have made the most important decision of your life. This is the beginning of a brand new life.

The Bible says that "If any man be in Christ he is a new creature; old things are passed away;
behold, all things are become new."

When you received Jesus as the Savior of your soul and the Lord of your life, the heavens rejoiced!

"I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."  Luke 15:10

HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT NEXT STEPS FOR YOU:

1. Start reading a King James Version of the Bible. Read the gospel of John. Then read the New Testament. Then start in Genesis and read the whole Bible. And when you finish the whole Bible – start over again. Read your Bible everyday. Three chapters a day (about 10 minutes) and five on Sunday will read it through in a year.
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 1 Peter 2:2

And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. Luke 4:4

2. Start a prayer life. You say, I don't know how to pray. Just talk to God like you do anybody else. You don't need to use fancy words. He knows you and just wants you to talk to Him from your heart. Get a notebook and start a prayer list. Put down your friends and loved ones that need to be saved. Pray for the president, the country. If you have needs, health, financial, marriage problems — ask God to help you. Pray about EVERYTHING. Open the door of the day (morning) with prayer and lock the night with prayer. You can not pray too much. In your day by day activities – pray. At work – pray. Driving in the car – pray. Wherever and whenever – pray. Decide that prayer is going to be your life-long friend.
Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice. Psalm 55:17

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Matthew 7:7-8

3. Tell somebody about Jesus. Go tell someone when you get through reading this that you just got saved. Tell your family. Tell your friends. Tell the world! Try to find someone everyday you can tell about Jesus.
And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ. Acts 5:42

Become a witness for Christ. Obtain Gospel tracts and give them out wherever you go. Think of the multitudes who have not yet found this wonderful experience of Salvation. You can share the Good News and win others to Jesus.

4. Fellowship with other Christians. Find you a local Bible-Believing Pentecostal church. If you can't find one, contact us and we'll try to locate one in your area. You need the fellowship of a local church. You need the leadership of a pastor. You need the teaching and preaching you can only get in the local church.
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. Hebrews 10:25

5. Be baptized.  Water Baptism is a public demonstration of what God has done in your life.

6. Memorize God’s Word

The one who has hidden God's word in his heart, submitting his life to its power, is truly blessed.

If the word of God is in your heart, you will be able to use it when facing temptation. God's word teaches us how to resist sin, why you should do so and what will happen if you don't. It teaches us how to do what God requires of us:

  • Jesus knew the word of God and was able to drive away Satan when tempted.  MATTHEW 4:1-11
  • King David clearly saw that knowing the word of God was the key to purity.  PSALM 119:9-11
  • Paul says that the word is a sword in your amour against the devil's schemes.  EPHESIANS 6:13-18
  • God's word in your heart keeps your feet from slipping.  PSALM 37:28-31

Another reason to memorize Scripture is to prepare yourself to answer those who challenge your faith in Christ.

2Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth

7. Pray Earnestly to Receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit

Acts chapter two gives the account of the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came and filled believers for the first time.  This power from God is for you today. When Peter preached to the amazed crowd who saw and heard the effects of the outpouring of the Spirit he told them:

Acts 2:38-39 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.  For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

8. Find an Accountability Friend

Y
ou increase your ability, stability and responsibility when you increase your sense of accountability to God. One way you can do this is to find another believer who will be your accountability friend. An accountability friend is a mature Christian who agrees to disciple you, to help you grow and mature in your new faith in Christ. It is someone who agrees to hold you accountable, someone who will help you carry through on what you determine to do.
